X-10

Thursday, April 8th, 2004

I dug into my magic box of X-10 stuff (better site) and put some modules to use. First, I automated another florescent light that’s in my workshop. Now all my lights come on with one button- BAM! I also automated the radio in the shop so I can kill it when annoying commercials come on. Finally, I put the dust collector on a circuit for remote control. I routed the control through to a small remote about the size of a car-key that I can carry around the shop or clip to my shirt. Now I can turn on/off the dust collector or the radio from anywhere in the shop! Particularly useful as the ON switch for the DC made me lean over the (off) tablesaw and hit the switch with a stick. No more!

Got the gig doing sound for the movie “Faith and Bullets”! It starts shooting in June. Still got quite a bit of work to do before it begins. Right now the bonus: I get to sound like a big-shot and say “I can’t talk about it due to the non-disclosure”. Yeah, that makes me feel like a big man.
They’ve hired a REAL actor for the lead role, which adds credibility and, hopefully, some acting talent. I’ve read the first 30 pages of script and it looks good.
Got another call to do sound on a low budget erotic thriller/horror film about a female serial killer.
Don’t worry, mom, I passed.

via metafilter: Go to this link (Quicktime required-welcome Patrick!) and take a listen. What you are hearing is Nickelback’s “Someday” in your left speaker and “How You Remind Me” in the right. Now tell me that the music industry doesn’t deserve to die.

Bor-ing

An interesting treatise on boredom that’s anything but.

“Boredom is paradise,” exults the poet Billy Collins, by e-mail from New York. It’s “the blessed absence of what the world offers as ‘interesting,’ i.e. , the lures of fashion, media and other people, which, you may recall, Sartre considered Hell.”

Lileks is great today. Favorite quote:

It’s all scored with oboe and bassoon and flute,, and the music sounds like the bowels of some rich Roman who dined on goat brains and lark thyroid.

Gee, I hope nobody says that about my stuff.

Oh, and a great turn of phrase:

prolix, labrynthic diplobabble

use THAT in a sentence tomorrow. heh

Router Table

Thursday, April 8th, 2004

I’m just doing this to see how long Patrick will wait for pictures. Eventually he’ll just show up at my door.
Put the electrics in tonight and managed not to electrocute myself. I wired up a plug, a main S.O. wire, the single pole switch, and 2 sets of outlets “downstream” that activate when you throw the switch. Now you can plug the shopvac into the outlet on the back and it’ll come on when the router does. Neat.
I also worked on the dust baffling inside, trimmed out the front of the main drawer in walnut, re-installed the drawer slides (they were too far forward and interfered with the trim), and got the whole thing ready for finishing. Tomorrow I’ll sand the thing and apply Ye Olde Tried and True.
